Product Details
Barefoot running's principle aim is to encourage people to adopt a more natural running style that obeys the body's evolutionary development. The human foot is engineered to strike closer to the midfoot than most cushioned running shoes allow, as such, barefoot running strips the superfluities away and retains only what is necessary to protect the foot from abrasive terrain. A more natural gait cycle conditions tendons, ligaments and muscles, whilst developing stronger, healthier feet and an improved posture.Upper

A breathable, engineered mesh upper and collar allow air to fully permeate the shoe's interior, promoting a cooler, drier and altogether more pleasant environment whilst a combination of exposed and covered sections deliver a blend of ventilation and structural support. A perforated, sandwich mesh tongue sits flatly across the top of the foot to alleviate lacing pressure, provide a comfortable fit and increase breathability. Flywire cables intersect the lacing eyelets to deliver a secure, stable and adaptive midfoot fit; an all over sublimated print finishes the shoe in a unique, distinctive aesthetic.
Midsole

The low-profile, Phylite midsole's robust construction allows it to also serve as the shoe's outsole, reducing the number of parts, potential fail points and weight. In a departure from previous iterations, the Nike Free 5.0 platform utilises full-length, multi-directional flex grooves, thereby increasing the number of flex points, facilitating increased articulation and setting a precedent in natural motion. An 8mm heel-to-toe drop provides an ideal compromise between providing sufficient cushioning and accommodating a natural gait style.
Outsole

A herringbone traction pattern enhances multi-directional movement throughout the forefoot, yielding a stable purchase on an array of surfaces whilst environmentally preferred rubber pods applied across the heel and forefoot regions increase durability, versatility and grip.

'After learning that Stanford athletes had been training barefoot on the university's golf course, three of Nike's most innovative and creative employees set out to develop a shoe that felt natural and weightless, similar to bare feet. In 2002, they examined a group of men and women with pressure measuring insoles taped to their feet, using high-speed cameras to capture images of each foot in motion. The team spent eight years studying the biomechanics of shoeless running. The results yielded a profound understanding of the foot's natural landing angle, pressure and toe position, allowing Nike designers to build an unconventional and flexible running shoe from the inside out.' - Nike
