Product Details
Barefoot running's principle aim is to encourage people to adopt a more natural running style that obeys the body's evolutionary development. The human foot is engineered to strike closer to the midfoot than most cushioned running shoes allow, as such, barefoot running strips the superfluities away and retains only what is necessary to protect the foot from abrasive terrain. A more natural gait cycle conditions tendons, ligaments and muscles, whilst developing stronger, healthier feet and an improved posture.
Upper

A compressive Flyknit upper is constructed from a series of elasticated threads that conform to the foot for a sock-like, locked-in fit. It seamlessly integrates areas of stretch, support and breathability whilst seams, weight and areas of friction are all reduced as a result. The polyester yarn is more open in areas that require enhanced flexibility and tighter in those that demand more support. Flyknit also eliminates the need for multiple materials and cuts that typify the uppers of traditional shoes, thereby reducing waste.
A network of Flywire cables cinch both the medial arch and lateral forefoot regions and integrate with the laces to deliver a secure and adaptive lockdown that can be loosened or tightened with ease. A Flyknit tongue is attached to the upper on either side with separate notches for easy entry, whilst an asymmetrical lacing system set towards the lateral side of the shoe drastically reduces lacing pressure.
Midsole

The low-profile, Phylite midsole's robust construction allows it to double as an effective cushioning unit and serviceable outsole, reducing the number of parts, potential fail points and weight. In a departure from previous iterations, the Nike Free 4.0 platform utilises a series of hexagonal flex grooves that offer 6 separate flex points, facilitating increased articulation and setting a precedent in natural motion. A 6mm heel-to-toe drop strikes an ideal compromise between providing sufficient cushioning and accommodating a natural gait style whilst a minimal, moulded sockliner mimics the curvature of the foot for additional support and comfort.
Outsole

A bevelled, anatomical heel allows the foot to roll naturally during the heelstrike phase of the gait cycle, preventing the foot from abruptly slamming into the ground and promoting a smoother, more natural step. Solid rubber reinforcements positioned under the toe enhance traction and durability in what is a particularly vulnerable area, whilst a series of waffle cut pistons work in concert with the midsole to absorb impact and then rapidly return to their original shape to deliver a smooth heelstrike and explosive toe off.

NIKE FREE ORIGINS
After learning that Stanford athletes had been training barefoot on the university's golf course, three of Nike's most innovative and creative employees set out to develop a shoe that felt natural and weightless, similar to bare feet. In 2002, they examined a group of men and women with pressure measuring insoles taped to their feet, using high-speed cameras to capture images of each foot in motion. The team spent eight years studying the biomechanics of shoeless running. The results yielded a profound understanding of the foot's natural landing angle, pressure and toe position, allowing Nike designers to build an unconventional and flexible running shoe from the inside out.FLYKNIT ORIGINS
Nike Flyknit technology was inspired by feedback from runners craving a shoe with the snug (and virtually unnoticed) fit of a sock. Nike embarked on a four-year mission with teams of programmers, engineers and designers to create the technology needed to make the knit upper with static properties for structure and durability. Then the precise placement of support, flexibility and breathability-all in one layer-was refined. The result is a featherweight, form-fitting and virtually seamless upper.
